Live in Canada

A Canadian citizen or permanent resident (PR) of Canada can sponsor his/her spouse, common-law partner, conjugal partner, dependent child (adopted child also included), parents and grandparents to become permanent resident. When a permanent resident arrives in Canada, he/she can live, work and study in Canada.

When you sponsor a relative, you have the responsibility of supporting your relative financially when he or she arrives. Your sponsored spouse or relative must not need financial assistance from the government.

Spousal Sponsorship

Family reunification is an important aspect of Canadian immigration. As such, if you have a spouse who is a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada, he/she can sponsor you to immigrate permanently to Canada. In this case, the applicant (non-Canadian or PR) does not have to meet the eligibility criteria to be able to sponsor the spouse. But, the sponsor (Canadian or PR) must meet all eligibility criteria to sponsor the spouse.

To make spousal sponsorship applications easier and faster, the Immigration, Refugee and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) made significant changes to this application stream on December 15, 2016.  A single (or combined) application package is used for application processed both inside and outside of Canada.

Parents and Grandparents Sponsorship

Parents and grandparents can be sponsored by their Canadian or permanent resident children or grandchildren for extended period in Canada. To be eligible for this program, the applicant must be a parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or permanent resident, be allowed to enter Canada and must meet certain other conditions.

Parental sponsorship requires that:

  • The sponsor and the sponsored parents or grandparents sign a sponsorship agreement which requires the sponsor provide financial support to the parents or grandparents.

  • The sponsor must provide financial support for the sponsored parents or grandparents for a period of 3-10 years, depending on the parents or grand parents’ age.

  • The financial support from the sponsor to the sponsored parents or grandparents is a major financial requirement.  Contact Us to get more information about this stream.

Most visitors’ visas to Canada are up to six months when they first enter and can be extended if the visitors wish to stay longer. With the parents and grandparents super visa, the parents and grandparents can visit their families who are Canadian citizens or permanent resident for up to two years at a time for the initial visit without having to renew their status.

This stream is a quick and easy way to reunite with families. The Super Visa is a multi-entry visa that allows multiple entries into Canada for up to 10 years.  The Canadian or PR children or grandchildren has the sole responsibilities of supporting them so they do not seek social assistance from the government.
